Cannabis retail license holders are the only legal retailers of cannabis products in Canada. As a cannabis retailer, you may only sell licensed cannabis products affixed with an excise stamp, obtained from one of Health Canada’s licensed producers. Licenses for cannabis retail are issued by provincial licensing bodies and subject to provincial licensing requirements.
The Cannabis Act came into force on October 17, 2018. Provinces and territories are responsible for determining how cannabis is distributed and sold within their jurisdictions. Cannabis retail regulations are determined by individual provinces and territories, as they are responsible for enacting restrictions regarding the sale, distribution, and use of cannabis. Therefore, licensing requirements will differ depending on where you live.
