dicentra Cannabis Consulting (dCC) Continues to Provide Expert Advice on Organic Cannabis Certification Ahead of the Canadian Organic Standards Revision

September 18, 2019 By

dicentra Cannabis Consulting (dCC), Canada’s full-service cannabis consulting firm, provides professional advice for fulfilling the requirements for cannabis growers seeking organic cannabis certification. dCC’s team of experts have successfully coached and consulted numerous cannabis businesses using best practices on organic cannabis growing.

The Canadian Organic Standards (COS) are the set of industry standards used in the federal organic certification process and enforced by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Currently, cannabis producers are not permitted to use the official Canada Organic logo because logo usage is restricted to food products and cannabis products are regulated by Health Canada. However, cannabis producers may apply for a third-party written certification confirming that their growing processes comply with basic Canadian Organic Standards and display the written confirmation on their website.

The COS is reviewed and updated every five years by The Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) to ensure that the standard remains relevant and applicable. Part of this review process involves releasing a draft version to the public for their consultation and comments. The current draft is open to the public, and public comments will be accepted until September 30, 2019. Farmers, processors, members of the public, and others are invited to comment on the proposed amendments to the Standard.

It is unlikely that cannabis will be included in the 2020 revision of the Canadian Organic Standards, however, there is still a demand for guidance on organic cannabis standards. dCC has extensive knowledge on growing processes and environmentally-friendly farming techniques that adhere to organic growing practices.

“The written organic certification evaluates everything from fertilizers, soil, artificial lighting, CO2, and irradiation,” said David Cohlmeyer, Business Plan and Farming Operations Specialist for dCC. “The market for organic cannabis is rapidly growing, especially as the market for edibles continues to expand. The demand for organic cannabis products is preferred by many consumers who want a higher quality non-irradiated cannabis without altered flavours and aromas. We’re happy to answer questions about what’s required for growing organic cannabis.”
